No one is a copy paste of the other. Although menstrual pain is a constant for most women and girls, there is a diversity in the intensity of the pain experienced. That is to say there are several types of dysmenorrhea. Two broad categories can be identified. These are;

Primary dysmenorrhea

It is characterized by spasmodic cramping of the lower abdomen especially during or prior to menstruation. Pain is the other dominant characteristic. It is one that starts in adolescence. After menarche, girls can expect this painful menstruation after about 6 – 24 months. Most of the women experiencing primary dysmenorrhea can foretell the pain patterns as they are going to occur. The pain can last for a maximum of 72 hours with pain becoming severe especially on the first or second menstruation days. Although the pain is expected at the lower abdomen, some women will have their pain project to affect the thighs and the back. And yet, pain is not the only characteristic here. Other symptoms include vomiting, nausea, fatigue, insomnia and diarrhea.

Secondary dysmenorrhea

Its menstrual pain of a higher level. It can wait for about two years before showing up in young girls after menarche. Unlike the primary counterpart, this type can show up due to pathological conditions such as fibroids, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease or adenomyosis. Menorrhagia and inter-menstrual bleeding can accompany it. Menses may or may not be associated with this condition. Endometrial tissue presence on the extra-urine locations is the condition called endometriosis that is the main factor to blame for occurrence of secondary dysmenorrhea.

Women suffering from either type of dysmenorrhea can share some characteristics including increased uterine PG.
